Treasure Hunting
The early portion of our journeys - our formative years - is a magical time of discovery. With fresh eyes we view our world with wonder and amazement, frolicking and playing with few cares and worries. Like explorers of old we venture forth with limited knowledge of where we are going or what we will find. And with each step we gather and store the treasures of knowledge.
Port of Call
As our journeys begin we rely on those closest to us to nurture and direct us. Those closest to us play a key role in preparing us for our journeys and steering us in the right direction.
Our families and teachers share the treasures they've found on their journeys by pointing out landmarks to help guide us as we ponder our initial passage. They teach us about our world and give moral direction. They coach us on how to build and maintain our ships of self. And they give us lessons on how to read and think so we can learn from the body of work created by those who have journeyed before us. In short, they give us the ability to eventually choose our own paths.
For many, the conscious choice of paths begins in adolescence, where we test boundaries and rebel against the foundation laid for us by our care-givers. Adolescence is an adjustment period where we begin to question the values imparted to us by our care-givers and search for truths beyond those laid before us.
Venturing Out
The paths we chose expose us to different experiences. We're unsure of what we will encounter, but by taking risks and exploring a variety of things we build a wide range of experiences to draw upon. Through experience we find what we enjoy and learn what we like to do most. Each of us is different, some like sports, or the great outdoors, while others enjoy reading or writing. The journey lasts a lifetime and every path we choose holds the potential to uncover new treasures.
Treasures are the pearls of wisdom and understanding we discover about our world and about ourselves. They're the truths we find - the things we verify as facts.
The greatest treasure of all is finding our passions - those pursuits which feed our souls and bring joy to our lives. Our passions are the safe harbors where we anchor our ships to ride out the storms that will surely come. Our passions are the most valuable treasures we possess.
